seeing as how sarah and i grew up in the same house, it's no surprise that my home smell is also roast chicken. although the smell of scrambled eggs and an english muffin toasting away in our toaster-of-the-month is my morning comfort smell--along with the smell of coffee (which reminds me of waking up at bea bea and poppy's house and knowing that at least one person was sitting at the kitchen table with a mug)--roast chicken is my ultimate home smell. not just because it's your signature dish, but i can't even begin to count the number of times i've come home from a day with my friends, a trip to south carolina, an afternoon of errands, etc. where i've opened the door and been greeted by this very specific smell. it's a strong, savory combination of garlic and herbs that makes me wonder why i didn't smell it while driving on durant. the last few times i've been home and walked into that smell, my first thought is "smells like home." there's not a doubt in my mind that if i was blind, i could find my way home by following that smell. oh, and i also feel the same way about mom's lavender. and butterscotch brownies in the oven. there was also a perfume that sarah wore in high school by the body shop and sometimes i go into the store and smell it because it reminds me of her. i wonder if i smell like coors light?

So the smell that reminds me of you, dad...now this is an easy one...ROAST CHICKEN!!! Mmmmmm...whenever I smell roast chicken anywhere - at whole foods, a friend's house, or even on north shore where they do the huli huli chickens that spin upside down - I always think of coming downstairs in my pajamas to the smell of you cooking roast chicken in the kitchen while listening to some form of jazz/oldies (usually Aretha Franklin). We might need to roast a chicken at my apartment in Hawaii too, just so Nani and my neighbors can feel the love that comes with your good ol' roast chicken smell! :) Love you!

My paternal grandfather, who smoked a pipe, died when I was 5, so I did not know him well. One day, while a student at Penn, I was walking down Locust Walk and someone going the other way was smoking a pipe. I immediately was taken back to my grandfather and was absolutely certain it was the same tobacco. I'm just sorry I didn't run back after the person and ask the brand name.
