This is why we’ve started The WordPress Helpers; “people” are finally starting to ask exactly the kinds of questions you’ve put forth, posed from that very simple position “I think I need to understand this “WordPress thing”.

One thing: WordPress currently powers about 23% of the Internet as a whole, and about 50% of what was deployed in 2014; your 70% figure is … odd.
