I was just feeling nostalgic about Rachel's Brownies and did a Google search to see if anyone out there was waxing poetic about them. I didn't truly expect to find something so close to the source! I used to buy the little trays (frozen, if I recall correctly) at Giant Food in the D.C. area. I never had another brownie quite like Rachel's. I used to bake for my own enjoyment (back when there were more hours in a day), but I never baked a brownie that I liked as well. After Rachel's Brownies went away, I tried very, very hard to make a brownie that captured the flavor and texture of Rachel's, but I was never quite satisfied. With the U.S. sweet tooth getting sweeter and sweeter over the decades, it's very surprising to me that ConAgra never marketed Rachel's Brownies again. I have to wonder if the cost of the quality ingredients made them insufficiently profitable compared to the mediocre mass-market fare. Ah well, I will continue to treasure the memory. <br />-Cathy Pollack
