A new product is being squeezed onto the kitchen counters of America alongside the toaster, Keurig, and Cuisinart. Say hello to Juicero.

A well-financed group has solved a problem for home juicing enthusiasts looking for convenience and healthy foods. Imagine having someone buy, wash and clean fresh produce for you. Then they put it into a convenient little bag that fits into your Juicero appliance. Out comes fruits and vegetable drinks without any of the inconvenience of shopping, washing or chopping.

For a culture obsessed with finding a way to get a daily dose of healthy greens, Juicero marries the best of Keurig with the benefits from a home juicer. It is a “razor and razor blade” solution, although, in this case, the Juicero is $700 bucks and the packs range from $4-10.

Juiced Up with Juicero

All of this is as easy as one, two, click.

  • First, you connect the Juicero to the Internet. (remember the Internet of things?)
  • Second, you pick the packs from an assortment of options and schedule your delivery. Like going on Netflix and orders DVDs.
  • Third, Juicero gets local, fresh organic produce within days of being picked and cuts, chops and cleans all the vegetables and fruits, then preserves it in their specially designed aseptic pouch.
  • Fourth, you hang the bag in the device and hit GO. There is no cleanup, just throw away the pouch and drink the squeezed glass. Their operating systems track when you will run out and even what nutrition you are getting.

The product is the brainchild of foodpreneurs Doug Evans, a raw food advocate. From Campbell Soup to investors like Kleiner Perkins and Google Ventures, everyone wanted to get in on the big squeeze. Only available in California right now, it is a combination of software, hardware, consumer electronics and agriculture.

Like Soylent, a liquified meal replacement and Tovala, an innovative new home cooking device, Juicero is leading the charge of next generation appliances. Cold press juice is such a fast growing category which Evans has been able to raise over $100 million dollars to jumpstart his juicy idea. But there are always headwinds coming toward you – some of these products have high sugar content, something health advocates avoid. And, like Keurig and Nespresso, the consumer has to deal with all of the disposable bags running counter to sustainability and environmental interests.

What I like about Juicero

  1. Doing something innovative with a trend toward healthy eating
  2. Targeting a niche of organic food lovers who love gadgets to make life simple.
  3. Uberizing a task – just press the button
  4. Creating a category of one – they have no competition – a blue ocean.
  5. Sufficiently financed, so they don’t have to skimp on any aspect of building the brand.
  6. Their YouTube video tells their story in less than two minutes. Crips. Clear. To the point.
  7. Start regionally so they can get it right in one big market – California, before expanding too quickly.

What business idea are you all juiced up about at your workplace?
